Treasure Island
I was assigned to read Treasure Island for my Studies in English Lit. class. It's an adventure. What I liked best is seeing where all the pirate jargon and cliches come from. Robert Louis Stevenson did some pirate research and also made stuff up...for example, the black spot on a piece of paper... Robert's idea. Stevenson's Treasure Island is the original pirate adventure you must read. I'll admit that I skimmed through the fighting scenes and lengthy descriptions of the island atmosphere, but all-in-all Treasure Island is a fun read. He established many of today's pirate catch phrases and cliches. I was watching Sesame Street today with my mother and nephew and during one scene I noticed they incorporated ideas from Stevenson's novel. It involves a cartoon parrot croaning "Pieces of eight. Pieces of eight."
